Eden Prairie Goalie Development Resources

Goalcrease:

EPHA goalies are provided with free and discounted 1-on-1 lessons at Goalcrease (real ice training center located on Washington Ave right on the EP border). Goalcrease is happy to help EP’s coaches and parents to better understand their goalie and how to develop them. You can reach us at 952-942-7001 or jhall@goalcrease.com. The information provided below should get you started, but every goalie has their own tendencies, so we can’t cover everything here.

Skating and Movement:

Goalies should participate in skating and edge drills with the team. If a goalie coach is available to use that time for goalie-specific skating/skill drills, that’s great too.

Start with this video:

Alex Stalock (NHL Goalie) doing his main skating drill routine.

EP goalies should work on these. Focus is on shuffles, balance, and getting set quickly.

Then add drills like these:

Edge work goalie drills.

More details on why these drills are so important:

Basic stance and goalie skating foundation explained

Notice that these drills have very little sliding or butterfly elements involved. Most goalies already practice that stuff, perhaps more than they should. They need a coach to encourage development of skating skills…But if your goalie struggles with the basic butterfly slide, here is a video that shows how to break it down into simple building blocks: Butterfly slide for beginners.
